great bargain receiver4
I did a lot of research (including Consumer Reports) and settled on this Onkyo as the best compromise between performance and price. I’ve had it 2 weeks now and am very happy.

The auto setup function works better than a much-more expensive Denon unit I set up for a friend. I used the microphone (included) to measure speaker levels at 3 different locations in the room and the Onkyo did everything else. (It’s connected to some older Polk speakers– they sound so much better through this amp!)

I bought this primarily to process audio from our new BluRay player and the Onkyo does an outstanding job. The sound is better than in most movie theaters! Especially BluRay DTS or HD Master. Wish more movies were recorded in these formats.

We also have our DirecTV HD DVR hooked up to the Onkyo. Audio and video travel through the HDMI Cables, so there’s no need to hook up audio separately. Very nice and a feature you will find missing from some more expensive amps.

The amp does get very warm. I put a small fan in the back of the cabinet and that seems to help.

BTW although this is a 5.1 channel amp is DOES support 7.1 if you want the 2 extra rear speakers… you just have to hook it up to your old amp (or any cheap 2-channel amp) and process those 2 channels that way. The 7.1 decoding IS built into this box.

I am not using the “Zone 2″ feature but it’s very unusual to have that in a receiver in this price range. You can watch a movie in one room while someone else listens to an iPod or FM in another room.

I don’t think you can find a better receiver in this price range (and keep an eye on the price– it’s falling!)

Good but not ideal for a variety of components4
I am replacing my 17 year old Onkyo receiver and bought this after a bit of research. Much improved over the years and sounds better than the old unit. I love the sound and the easy setup. The instruction manual is great.

I have a variety of components, some HDMI, some composite video, some digital video, etc. As mentioned in other reviews, this unit will only output the same format that is input. This means that if you have composite video in, you will need to output composite video. For my situation, this meant a variety of output cables and additional button pressing when switching between components (e.g. cable box to DVD player).

Considering the cost of cables, I decided to go with the TX-SR607 because it converts all inputs to HDMI output. This means no adjustments to the TV input when switching components and no additional cables. Wish I knew this before I ordered the product and thought I would share my experience.

If all of my components were HDMI I would certainly choose this receiver.

Great receiver for beginner audiophiles!5
Let me start by saying I did tons of research and settled on Onkyo because of the ease of setup, hdmi inputs and price. I initially thought I was going to get the sr606, but decided against it because it’s a behemoth, the video upconversion didn’t get good reviews, and I’m only going to use 5.1 surround sound. This receiver offers a lot of the same features as the 606 in a much smaller package. I paired it with Definitive Technology Procinema 600 5.1 surround system and it sounds great. Much better than my 10 yr old Sony receiver with sony and bose speakers.

Cheap in short term, but they get you on the print cartridges3
I got this printer for $150 and thought it was a steal. It prints very well, although it’s pretty noisy. However, after being aware for several years of the contradiction of cheap inkjets — manufacturers would practically give away the printers because they charged roughly $3500 a gallon for ink — I realize that I have been suckered. Yes, this printer is inexpensive, but it quickly runs out of ink and you have to buy the shorter-life, more expensive CE505A cartridges (about $88) instead of the more cost-effective CE505X cartridges (less than twice the price, but three times the number of pages). So if you want to be able to use the 505X cartridges, you should buy the printer that uses those. Also, Amazon doesn’t sell the CE505A cartridges, so I had to buy mine from Staples. I hate feeling like a sucker!

No driver for Snow Leopard 10.64
I purchased this printer 6 months ago and it has been a good solid printer. Recently I upgraded my iMac to Snow Leopard OS 10.6 and realized just about every driver for HP products is available except the P2035 and a handful of others. HP is working on a driver for Snow Leopard but does not have a date yet. If you have a iMac running Snow Leopard heads up!!!

Good, but Jasu, the printer cartridge!3
I have had this printer for several months and have only recently been printing stuff on a regular basis. The cartridge says it is good for 2300 pages, and that goes by quickly. The replacement cost is $83+ dollars, which is nearly half the cost of the printer. That is roughly 3.6 cents a page. I suppose this is okay, but $83 seems high to me. Must be fantastic technology involved.

Otherwise the printer works very fine.

Customer Reviews:

Happy with a Canon product again5
This is a well made battery charger and very easy to use. No long cord with a plug. It plugs right into the electric socket. Handy to carry with you. I am happy with the Canon SD700IS digital camera and not surprised that any accessories would also merit a 5 star rating.

Exactly the charger that came with the camera5
If you lost your charger that came with the camera, this is exactly the same one. I looked for cheaper versions at Best Buy and other stores, but those chargers were all so much larger in size. This Cannon charger is so compact that it is easy to keep with the camera, and it seems to charge faster than the cheaper brands as well.

Cheaper at Amazon than anywhere else5
I didn’t want to risk a generic charger and got the Canon brand at the lowest price at Amazon.

Customer Reviews:

Best iPhone/iPod Docking Clock Radio5
I searched a long time for a combo clock radio and docking station for my iPhone. Although there are several on the market, I wanted something that took up as little space as possible on my night stand, had a display with large numbers, would charge my iPhone, play music from my iPhone as the alarm instead of the radio, and was easy to use.

I FOUND IT!! This Sony clock radio is great, and has TONS of features. I like the large illuminated display, which has different settings depending on how bright you want the light at night. Setting the alarm is very easy (you can go forward and backward through hour and minutes, without having to run completely through the cycle like most clocks), and there are TWO alarm settings. You can set an alarm for weekdays to get you up for work, and then a separate alarm for the weekend. Pretty cool.

The snooze button is nice and big on top of the unit, and let’s you take the standard 10 minute snooze, or you can keep pressing the button and lengthen the snooze time up to 60 minutes in 20 minute increments. A nice feature.

There’s a sleep feature timer so you can listen to radio or iPhone/iPod music while you fall asleep. For the alarm, you can have a buzz, AM or FM radio, or a tune from your iPhone, and it works great.

Buttons on the front and side are nice and large so you don’t have to grope in the dark, and there are a variety of customizable settings.

The best part is the hidden slide-out docking tray. Pop it out when you want to charge your iPhone/iPod or listen to music through the clock’s speaker, and push it back in when you don’t need it, making the unit’s footprint as small as possible. The docking tray comes with adapters to fit iPhone or iPod. I use mine without either adapter because I have a protective case on my iPhone, but it still fits in nicely.

In reading back my review, I sound like a Sony employee, but I’m not. Have no connection to the product, other than I’m a satisfied customer, and would recommend this unit highly to anyone looking for a docking station/clock radio for their iPhone or iPod. There are too many other features to go into here. Have fun discovering all the great things Sony thought of to include on this unit.

Thanks for a great unit, Sony!

Radio reception is weak, otherwise a terrific iPhone/iPod clock radio4
First off, I want to say that I like almost everything about this alarm clock and that I went to a Best Buy first and tested it (music and all) right next to its bigger Sony sibling (the one with the CD player, called Sony ICFCD3iP CD Clock Radio for iPod and iPhone) as well as the iHomes and Logitech and other competitors. Essentially this one came out the winner in every way IF what you’re looking for is an ALARM CLOCK. This is not a speaker system by any stretch (it’s not even stereophonic, one speaker), it’s not designed to party to or have it produce massive bass sounds. I know this is obvious to most of you but there’s always some imbecile who doesn’t seem to realize that a little alarm clock barely bigger than your iPhone can’t possibly be a stereo system.

As an alarm clock, I loved this little system precisely because it does so much and takes up so little space. The LED lights are not too bright when you go to the lowest setting, the sound is definitely loud enough for you to hear even if you’re in the next room at high volume, the iPhone dock is easy to use and can be used with a case on your iPhone. It also looks good and it’s nice that the dock cradle slides in, overall it looks A+.

Since I also compared this one in person to the Sony ICFCD3iP CD Clock Radio and tested them both simultaneously, I can offer you these observations if it’s helpful to you. I ruled out the iHomes, by the way, because all systems that make you stick your iPhone on top like that are horrible looking, maybe that was cool in 2007 if you thought having an iPhone is cool and you want it brandished like it’s a trophy, but that now looks tacky, dated and cluttered. This comparison is between this Sony product vs the one with the CD player:

–Size: I liked the CD player one more because I actually thought this one looks a bit too small. This is purely personal preference, if smaller is better for you then go for this one.

–Layout: I call this a draw. One thing that’s better on the CD player one is that since it’s bigger, there was room to put the tuner and the preset switches on the sides of the device rather than on the back which is not as convenient. You probably won’t use these two switches much though so this probably doesn’t matter much. One thing I liked better on this one is that hitting the snooze as you’re groggy is pretty safe, but on the CD one, since the opening for the CD player is right in front of the snooze button, you can very well accidentally open the CD tray violently if you hit the snooze and aren’t careful.

–Speaker, sound: Basically a draw for me. The Sony descriptions on Amazon, and indeed even on the boxes of the two products, tell you nothing about power. I had to look under the devices themselves (which got me bad looks from the salespeople) to find out that this alarm clock’s speaker is rated at 10 watts. The CD player’s speaker rated at 16 watts. Normally I’d say this means the CD player clock is better, but oddly at similar volumes in the store, I actually found this alarm clock’s speaker to be better defined than the bigger one from the other Sony, and almost as loud. The bass was slightly better on the other one though. But since this is an ALARM CLOCK and not a speaker system by any stretch, I frankly didn’t care either way, they’re both plenty loud to wake up to music or the radio to and close enough in quality despite the different wattage.

–iPhone dock: here I expected them both to be the same, but I was surprised that the iPhone dock trays are not designed the same, and that this Sony’s design of the tray was actually better than the CD player’s. The CD player’s tray hangs in the air, in that when it opens up there is space under. So when you put your iPhone in you kind of have to grab the tray or else the whole thing tilts, it’s not a good setup. The tray that comes out of this clock, on the other hand, has the end of it flush with the clock’s bottom and whatever table it’s on. So it’s much more secure and you can just dock your iPod on it with one hand and not worry about a thing. So the clear loser is the CD alarm, as this one is better designed. Both can fit an iPhone with the case on by the way, just don’t use the tray inserts that come with this.

–LED illumination: here too this Sony beats out the CD Sony. Both clocks have three light settings. I put them side by side and tested them both. The upshot is that the bigger one has much brighter LED lights. When I compared both at the lowest setting, the bigger clock was still pretty bright and would be annoying in the dark (unless you’re scared of monsters at night and want a night light). At its lowest setting, this Sony here was still just a bit brighter than I would have liked, but not nearly as annoying as the CD player’s light. This is a big reason why you see good reviews of this Sony here while the CD player’s reviews are generally bad with lots of complaints about the light level.

I did buy this alarm clock and all in all, I really wanted to love it, but over the past two weeks it has infuriated me with one BIG design flaw that is making me return it because it is fatal. It simply can’t reliably stay tuned to a radio station so as to wake you up to it.

Now if you don’t care at all about waking up to radio, consider this a 5-star review and move on. But I like to wake up to NPR, a strong FM station in my area. I’ve had an 9-year-old CD player alarm clock beside me before this Sony, and not once did it fail to wake me up to a strong NPR signal when the alarm was set. This brand new Sony, on the other hand, comes in and out! You can test it before going to sleep and the sound is 100% clear, and yet when it comes on in the morning it sounds like it is barely tuned to the station unless you play with the ugly and unsightly antenna cable that sticks out of the back of it. Even if you didn’t touch that unsightly cable all night.

Even WORSE, when it comes on like that in the morning, if it is not receiving the FM station well, you don’t even get static noise (which at least would still wake you up), you get nothing but a very faint buzzing that doesn’t wake anyone up! I’ve already been late to work three times on account of this clock’s failure to maintain a lock on a station. I’ve even tried testing the position of the ugly antenna before going to bed and having the volume very high, yet still for no apparent reason at all it sometimes fails to lock on in the morning and you sleep peacefully to 8:30 am to a very low audio buzzing sound that seems to lull you into an even deeper sleep.

The culprit is that Sony really cheaped out on the FM receiver.

How they can make such a colossal design flaw on a product that costs more than competitors like iHome that are larger and with better speakers is inexplicable. I really wanted to love this, but it’s an ALARM CLOCK and if it simply loses connection to a station in the morning despite the ugly antenna cable and can’t wake you up, what good is it? Shame on Sony for having such a design flaw by cheaping out on internal components. Whoever was in charge of approving that is incompetent and should be fired because he doesn’t understand retail products, this is not a $20 alarm clock on which you can use cheap transistors to save 50 cents. This is an alarm clock aimed at a slightly higher market and there is an expectation that at the very least it can be reliably counted on to wake us up in the morning.

REVISED REVIEW FROM HERE ON OUT

I am revising my review, going from two to four stars, because as time as gone by the radio reception seems to have improved (but only after careful placement of the antenna cord and making sure it’s never moved), and I decided that all the positives and the lack of a good competitor warrants better than two stars. It’s still the most compact, efficient and best looking alarm clock out there… I just wish they used better components for the radio receiver.

Great clock and antenna5
I wanted to add a quick note about this clock radio because most of the other reviews for clock radios don’t address the issue that was the most important to me- the strength of the antenna. I was looking for an alarm clock that would get better reception in our bedroom than the one we presently own. This clock is able to pick-up stations that are either too fuzzy to hear or don’t even come in on our current clock.

I also like that the iPod dock slides out, so that I don’t have a large piece of machinery sitting on my bedside table! I am very pleased with this clock radio and my husband is going to be thrilled on Father’s Day!

960 vs. 970 vs. 7805
My old tiny Casio Exilim 5 MP camera died- I loved that thing because it was so tiny and I took many more pictures because it fit in my pocket- and I had to get something for my trip to France. First bought the 970 thinking, ooh, 5x optical zoom. For someone used to ultracompact, that thing was huge and I didn’t notice much difference between the 5x and the 4x or 3x zoom. I returned it and got the 960, which I stuck with. It is much smaller than the 970 though bigger than my old camera (won’t fit in pants pocket too comfortably), but the wide-angle zoom makes a huge difference to the photos. I travelled with someone who had the 780, and we frequently traded the same shot with both cameras, and the picture quality was much better with the 960, though it is larger than the 780. The controls were easy to navigate, the viewscreen very wide/ large on the 960. The video quality is amazing. Aside from the size, the only downside was that it is a little slow to take repeat shots in action situations. However, the motion control is excellent and you can take shots while jogging without blurring. Sadly, I lost my new 960 at the airport (thankfully, I had downloaded the photos). I decided to replace it with the 780 because I’m not a photographer, thought having the very small camera would make up for the difference in picture quality. After 250 photos on the 960, and 2 days with the 780, I miss the wide-angle zoom and am considering getting another 960. It’s not that much bigger than the 780, and the picture quality difference is significant.

Great Still Images, Excellent 720P for the price5
The true market for this camera is someone who wants to have one device that is compact, shoots excellent quality pictures, and has the capability of capturing 720P HD movies.

It’s a Canon, so the image quality is a given. Tons of examples on Flickr if you simply search for “canon SD960″ or “IXUS 110″. Colors are true, not highly sharpened, low chromatic aberration, and rich with detail. Do not, however, mistake this power of the DIGIC IV processor to be perfect and free of noise at high zoom or ISO above 400. Compared to its class, however, the results are just great for the price point.

But the odds are you are looking at this camera not just for its stills ability, but the fact that it can also shoot HD movies.

So how does the HD perform. Here, the optical stabilization and optical zoom make this a far better choice than it’s nearest hybrid competitor, the Flip HD. The Flip is a fun, very easy to use device, but the lack of image stabilization in camera makes the output very choppy and prone to a “jello” wobbling effect. The Canon has a much smoother output. A strong performer in low light (but expect more noise) and a really excellent result in natural light. For samples, my best recommendation is to search Vimeo — they have the best HD streaming of uploaded videos, and looking at results on Youtube (even if “HD”) doesn’t do the camera justice.

In practice, Mac users will be happy to see that iPhoto can handle the whole offload process — stills and movies. Launch iPhoto, turn on camera and load what you’d like. The movie files are H.264, and can be quickly edited in iMovie or Final Cut.

One worthy note on shooting movie and zoom. You frame your shot and set focus with a half push of the shutter button. Press all the way to record. Once you start recording, you are set at your original zoom level and can not use the OPTICAL zoom to pull closer. Instead, the camera uses DIGITAL zoom to get closer. In practice, I found this did not produce a terribly degraded result, but it is worthy noting before you purchase the camera.

Mono mic on the camera, which pics up sound very well — even on the crowded/noisy streets of NYC.

The cheaper Canon SD780 is very nice also if you are looking to save $50. The newer jog wheel and extra zoom, however, was worth the upgrade (IMHO).

Budget for one of the 8G or 16G SDHC cards sold on Amazon for 50+ minutes of HD recording. And probably worth buying a 3rd party second battery to have on hand.

As advertised, a good point and shoot3
Got this camera a month ago just before the Coachella festival, where I shot ~4GB worth of jpgs and ~2GB of video. I used max resolution for both and did not use the fully automatic modes and other gimmicks. Being an all day festival in the desert, I had plenty of opportunity to test the camera under harsh light, shadow, twilight and artificial lighting at night.

Video wise no complains; this is not a video camera and whatever you get out of it is a plus IMHO. I got usable footage of bands at night, with reasonable sound quality, and I suspect the image stabilization improved the shots, since I don’t have very steady hands.

Still photography is another matter. I got plenty of purple fringes under sunlight and way too much noise under low light. Going beyond ISO 400 is reckless, and the lens stops down too much as you start zooming, making matters worse. 12MP is a marketing gimmick; you’ll seldom get good enough quality shots that you can enlarge where such resolution would be needed; half the pixel density and much lower noise would yield plenty more enlargement worthy pics.

Controls are limited, you can tweak exposure compensation and sensitivity and that’s about it. The flash is best for harsh sunlight situations. Having said that, this is a very compact point and shoot, with a very nice LCD and good focusing; a good camera for snap shots and 4×6 prints.

Good Value at This Price Point4
While these JBUDS did not, in a side by side comparison, provide as much surrounding, warm sound as my Sennheiser 212 headphones, they provided excellent clarity, especially on KJAZZ radio. Talk formats are also excellent. The comfort is surprisingly good for an in-ear bud. For 20 dollars, this is a great substitute for the cheaper buds that come with most MP3 players.

Update on 12-21-06: I’ve come to be more impressed with my JBuds over the last two weeks, marvelling at the bright, crisp, and yes, warm sound that comes out of these inexpensive buds. Perhaps, as I’ve read in some of the headphone information that is out there, that there is a “breaking in” period, which has something to do with loosening the tranducer. In any event, I’d have to give these JBuds another star.

Second Update 10-8-07: My only complaint about the JBuds is that sleeping with them at night I will sometimes wake up and the bud will have fallen off. I can’t secure the buds to my satisfaction; however, the JBuds are so comfortable I deal with this problem.

Third Update 1-7-08: The sound is not quite as good as the slightly more expensive V-Moda; however, the JBuds are easier on my ears for long-term (I sleep with them on) listening. Also the JBuds have a longer extension and don’t pull out of the radio or iPod headphone jack as easily as the V-Modas, so again on balance the JBuds are better.

like ‘em a lot4
I bought these headphones to replace my Sony MDR-EX51LP Fontopia Headphones. I like these better for one two reasons
1) completely superficial reason - it matches my black ipod
2) completely non superficial reason - it’s better for my hearing

I typcially keep the sound on my ipod locked at 75% to minimize damage to my ears. With these JBuds I don’t have to take that precaution, because I never have to raise the volume up that high. And I listen to my ipod chiefly going back and forth on the subway in D.C., where it can be pretty difficult to block out the sound of the train. I’m really glad I bought them.

Two words of caution, however. First, I don’t think the sound is as good as it was with the Sony headphones. I listen mostly to podcasts and audiobooks, though, so it doesn’t affect me much. Also, I’m not an audiophile so my standards aren’t that high. Secondly, I’ve gone through 3 pairs of these types of headphones due to the rubber tips falling off. While I prefer these type of headphones to other in-ear phones (I’ve got small ears, and other types hurt), this is getting pretty aggravating. So electronic companies? Work on that.

Wonderful - best $20 headphones you can buy5
Awesome headphones. I love these guys and have been using them for about 6 months now. Their sound is impeccable, and are extremely comfortable, I wear them while studying I mean like 8-10 hours a day, and never really notice them. I wouldn’t say that these are actually noise cancelling via electrical interference, its more via sound muffling than anything, but don’t misinterpret, with the sound at a medium volume you will kill all but the loudest ambient noise. I highly recommend these. Flat out the best $20 I have EVER spent.

Customer Reviews:

No fuss, worked well5
I purchased this set for a trip to England. The adapter worked like a charm with several different electronic devices that I brought with me. I stayed in three different hotels in different parts of the country and never had any trouble whatsoever. Plug this into the wall, plug your device into this adapter, and you are good to go. It was just that easy and worked perfectly every time. The only thing you have to watch is that whatever you plug in can run on the foreign voltage or you’ll need a transformer as well. Fortunately, most devices are now made to run on voltage ranging from 110 to 220 but you should always check just to be sure you don’t short out anything.

Very Nice Product5
Bought two pairs (for myself and a friend). I tried plugging in my cell phone charger and my generic iPod charger, and both fit well into all 5 of the adapters. I bought these for our trip to Europe in the coming summer (both Ireland/England and continental Europe). A bit cheap construction, but for the price on Amazon, it’s worth it. I’ll see how well they’ll work in the summer, but I’m sure they’ll work fine. If not, there’s a 3 year warranty.

after trip: these worked great in ALL the countries we visited (ireland, england, france, italy, germany)!

Travel adapter plug set5
I purchased this set for a trip to Ireland and Scotland. The plug for that area worked well….no problems in either country.

Fast drive, tons of storage5
The Caviar Black model of drives differ in three ways from Blue in three major ways:

1) 32MB buffer vs 16MB. This means the drive is overall faster because it can store more data in memory local to the drive. So if you access the same data frequently there is little or no drive access to get at the data.

2) Dual processors vs single. This will alleviate the load on your CPU as the drive itself has more processing power locally.

3) Five year warranty vs three. Five years is a lifetime in hardware. Basically, you’re covered for longer than you will most likely use the drive.

The Caviar Black line comes in three four sizes; 1TB, 750GB, 640GB, and 500GB. The 1TB and 640GB are the fastest because they use a denser platter technology which allows the drive head to get at the data quicker. The 750GB and 500GB are no slouches though and the differences in speed will not be noticeable to most people under most real-world usage scenarios.

Caviar Black drives are the fastest affordable consumer drives available today. If you want faster you have to look that the VelociRaptor 10000RPM line of drives but expect to pay a lot more for a lot less storage.

I measured the speed of the 750GB model using the HD Tune utility and access time was a fast 12.5ms with less than 1% CPU usage on my 3.2Ghz Intel Quad Core setup. The drive runs cool at 32°C in my system and is quiet. Overall a great drive at a great price. You can’t really go wrong.

Beginner’s guide to adding a second hard drive5
This is for people (like me) who’ve never done this before… I use Windows Vista and an HP desktop computer.

1. Ordered this drive, which arrived promptly. Drive was well packed with foam. As expected, it didn’t come with anything else. It works fine, and to me it doesn’t seem noisy.

2. Ordered Tripp Lite P940-19I Serial ATA (SATA) Signal Cable (19 Inches). Note: older computers won’t support SATA. If you have a newer computer, it should work. SATA cables are red and about 1 cm wide, the older cables are about an inch wide and silvery. If your hard drive uses these, don’t get this drive.

3. Ordered Tripp Lite P946-12I Serial ATA (SATA) Dual Power Adapter Cable - 4pin/2×15pin SATA - 12in. This is a “Y” adapter (optimistically planning for my next hard drive!), but a straight one would also work. I found out after it arrived I already had a SATA power adapter in my case. However, it wouldn’t have reached with the available wiring length, so I still ended up using this.

4. In my case, the drive requires 4 screws to install it. These are short screws with large flat heads, the heads form a sort of “rail” for it to glide into the rack on. On opening my case, I realized that HP had thoughtfully provided extra screws for future upgrades! The drive does not come with screws.

5. Installed drive in rack, plugged in the two cables, no problem.

6. Get to Windows. Your new hardware icon should say “locating… installing” or something like that.

7. Go to Start-Computer (right click on Computer) - Manage - then to Disk Management. Find your new drive at the bottom of the screen, and click over the “drive 1″ (or whatever) designation to make it “online”. Then right click the long color band over the drive’s partition graphic and start the “new simple volume” wizard. Stayed with the defaults.

That’s about it, everything worked the first time. After the drive was up and running, I decided to error-check the drive from Windows Explorer (under the tools tab for drive). This gave the unexpected result of giving me a blank screen for several hours while it checked it. When I’ve error-checked drive c:\, my screen gives me information on what it’s doing. This was just totally blank, which was disconcerting, but in a few hours it finished what it was doing and everything worked.

I also went into the BIOS on bootup (pressed F10 while booting, don’t know if this is the same on other PC’s) to see if I needed to do anything there, but I didn’t. The new drive was already listed. I did get a new option on booting, to set up the drive in a RAID configuration, I left this alone. (non-RAID)

This is written to help first-timers like me. If any experienced computer folks want to comment and add pearls of wisdom feel free!

1TB of space, 32MB cache *PLUS* SATA2? Absurd. Buy now5
I bought two of these. Just an insane price. Thanks, Amazon. The drives are bulk/OEM which means they come with nothing. Just the drives and the anti-static bags. Do your homework. If you want software to hold your hand through a hard drive install, do not buy this drive. If you need screws, rails, or cables, do not buy this drive.

If you want to save some cash while getting an absolutely absurd amount of disk space with SATA2 (3Gbps) plus 32MB of cache (older drives have 4-16MB), then get these drives. They are beasts.

After the Seagate fiasco, I vowed to go with an alternative. Western Digital came through with these monster hard drives. Get one. Get two. You will not be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:

Works well with Epson Picturemate Printer5
I needed some extra sheets of 4×6 photo paper to run the ink cartridge in my Picturemate down to empty. So I thought I would try this premium paper. The Epson website is very vague about what paper will work in the Picturemate. Well my experiment shows that the S041727 paper works better than the T5570 paper that comes with the refill kit. The S041727 paper is thicker and whiter than standard picturemate paper.

5+++ stars5
I purchased this paper because it was the cheapest brand out there- and printing your own photos is an expensive hobby. I had intended to use Epson papers for trial runs or copies for friends. However, the quality of my photos was incredible using epson paper. The colors are much more vivid and they don’t fade over time as some photo papers do. I now use Epson paper for all my 4×6 photos and I save money!

Best Paper for Epson Photo Printers5
Not only is this photo paper the most inexpensive paper I have used, but it is simply the best. The printed photos have a glossy finish that makes them indistinguishable from the regular film prints. I have used Kodak and HP premium papers and they don’t hold a candle to the Epson brand. I have also used the older Epson paper and a no-name brand and neither were as bright and brilliant as this paper. I am using an Epson Stylus Photo RX500 and the prints are fabulous.

Amazon.com Product Description
Epson’s Premium Glossy Photo Paper provides high quality, high gloss photo prints, perfect for use in glass frames, photo albums, and even for enlargements. Each package contains 100 sheets of 4-by-6-inch photo paper, recommended for use in many Epson printers for delivering border-free prints. This paper has a bright white (92 ISO rating) resin coat finish that helps ink dry quickly, resisting smudging and bleeding.

Just what I’ve been looking for!5
I’ve spent the last few months dealing with a horrible wireless n router so I decided to go with this one. I also have a TREDNnet wireless n gaming adapter and it’s been fantastic so far. Anyways, this router runs cool even though I’ve been using multiple connections at the same time and using tons of traffic. My PC shows that I average 250Mbps and I see it peak at 300 constantly so the speed is as advertised. I have it running in mixed mode. It only took about 10 minutes to set the router up out of the box. Once I plugged in my cable modem and my pc it automatically configured the connection and I just had to log in and configure the wireless portion and security. In the 10 minutes I also configured my DDNS and my wireless IP Cameras to work with the router. It’s a super easy interface…..pretty much the same as any other router you can buy. When saving settings the reboot only took a few seconds and always went back into the setup. Most routers clunk out and you have to reset and log back in manually. I could go on and on but to keep this short I’d have to say that this router is awesome and it does EXACTLY as advertised. I’ve used most of the major brands of routers and I can’t say much for most. It’s very difficult to find a good reliable product but I think I’ve gotten lucky with this one. Don’t believe hype or buy something because you’ve heard the name before. The only other router I’ve ever been happy with was a Viewsonic believe it or not. That thing was rock solid and never gave me a single problem. If anything changes I will post it….otherwise you can count on this router. I love how people here are claiming they have advanced knowledge but can’t set this router up. It’s really very very simple just follow the quick setup in the manual.

*UPDATE 1/17/10*
Still no reset needed! I’ve been using tons of data with multiple devices. As a matter of fact Netflix is streaming to my living room right now. I have a torrent downloading on this pc @ 500kB/s and there are no hiccups. Just solid lightning fast connections!

*UPDATE 3/14/10*
Still no reset needed. I’m running in Mixed Mode and you MUST run 20/40 on the Bandwidth to get full speed. That must be the problem with others but this is standard with any N router.

Good buy if discounted3
A basic wireless router which has features and functions that generally work as advertised, including port fowarding. Most home users wouldn’t need any more. The 3yr warranty is best in industry, just hope you don’t need to collect.

Simple to set-up & configure ( ignore CD):
First, plug in router, connect to modem and PC via ethernet cables; then disconnect power to modem and router. Then, re-connect power to modem and wait for about 30 secs., then connect power back to the router. Now re-boot PC’s and the router will have assigned IP’s via DHCP. You can type 192.168.10.1 into browser to access advanced router/wireless set-up & settings ( username:admin ; leave password blank ).
——————————-
User interface dumbed-down from prior model (633GR)

No QoS (contrary to some descriptions).

Even with these features DISABLED, router allows ‘WAN Ping Respond’ and ‘Remote-Management’. ‘Remote-Port’ assignment for ‘Remote-Management’ is ignored. These problems could be a security issue (use strong p/w).

Router REBOOT takes way too much time and did NOT clear a problem requiring a power re-cycle.

No activity log accessable to user.

LAN connection (RJ-45) sockets are too snug & too closely spaced & interfere with antenna motion.

Only connected device’s MAC address are reported, not the local computer “name”.

While Trendnet support is responsive, helpfulness decreases as problem complexity increases.
———————————
Factory installed Firmware (v1.0.9.135, 9-Nov-2009) is NEWER than that offered at Trendnet.com for this model (v1.0.8.16 Sep/8/2009) …strange?

This router replaces a Trendnet TEW633-GR model I really liked except for one problem… which I had hoped the TEW639GR would fix…. it didn’t. I returned the 633 and kept the 639 ONLY because my cost for 639 was less than 1/2 that of my discounted cost for the 633 model.

Features I miss from my TEW633GR:
variable wireless transmitt power, local computer names, MAC address look-up for DHCP reservations, log file, Streamengine(i.e. QoS), much more advanced router controls, stand for vertical mount, unobstructed antennas motion, Bridge-Mode …

item is recommended if you can acquire at 40%+ discount although the TEW633GR is clearly a better router.

Drops wireless internet connection1
Bought this router because of the good review that appear here. Setup and installed easily. Have 2 wired and 1 wireless computer. Wireless computer has a Dell wireless G board and a D-Link DWA-130C G/N adapter. When it works the range and speed seems pretty good. However when running in N mode the router drops wireless internet connection every 5 to 45 minutes. To get it to work you have to reset something or reboot. When in G mode it can stay connected for up to two hours with both of the adapters. I have to go into the room with the other computers to reset it, a pain when it is doing it every 5 minutes.
Customer support by email is ok but slow. Still have not got a resolution and my patience is shot. I have searched the internet and found other sites that sell this item. The reviews range from 1 to 5 stars. Pretty
many 1 stars, some who are experiencing the same problem I have. Interesting thing is that on some of them the
manufacturer responds.
As soon as I find another brand router and order it, this one is going back to Amazon.
Also the interface wants you to re-enter id like about every 5(?) minutes. Never could figure out how to
forward ports in DHCP mode. Now that it is going back I’m not going to take the time to set up static ips.
Also looking for new N router is tough, most of the popular N routers here have about 15-25% 1 and two star ratings. TREDNnet 300Mbps Wireless N Gigabit Router TEW-639GR (Black)
